MACKAY and PLATYPUS SPECTACULAR
Dates: From 1st June 2017 to 12th November 2017
Day 1- Tuesday: (L, D). Depart Brisbane by air for Mackay (am flight) On arrival at Mackay you will be met by your guide and taken for lunch and then it’s off city tour and heritage walk in the city centre prior to going to your accommodation for the next 7 nights.
Day 2- Wednesday: (B,L,D). Today is Sugar day starting with a visit to a working cane farm to see harvesting and transfers of the cane to the rail then off for morning tea and a tour of a working sugar mill (long pants, long sleeve shirt & covered shoes) flowed by lunch at the Farleigh Tavern. After lunch, you will be taken to Racecourse Mill to hear about the Refinery and the Cogeneration plant then it’s off to the Mackay Harbour to see where the Sugar is stored packaged and shipped out by road and sea to all parts of the world.
Day 3- Thursday: (B,L,D). Travelling from Mackay to Sarina for morning tea at the fields of dreams and a tour of the Sarina Sugar Shed where you can sample all the product that are made from sugar, after this a short walk back through the field of dreams and the local art and craft store. From here we take the short drive to lunch today will be had at Sea Eagles Resort at Salonika Beach. After lunch, it’s off to Hay point Bulk Coal Loading Port the largest in the world for a view of the port from the viewing platform.
Day 4 – Friday: (B,L,D). Today you will join all-inclusive Platypus & Rainforest Eco Safari through the picturesque Pioneer Valley with its thousands of hectares of sugar cane – the largest sugar growing area in Australia. Stop in Eungella National Park in Finch Hatton Gorge at our private bush camp “The Finch Hatton Hilton” with a mountain stream running alongside for our BBQ Lunch. After lunch, we will travel to Finch Hatton Gorge for our walk in the rainforest and a swim if you so desire. From here the journey will take you to Sky Windows for breath taking views of the Pioneer Valley through to the coast from a window in the rainforest. Now it’s onto broken river to try to spot a Platypus in their natural habitat in the rainforest. Dinner tonight will be had in the rainforest at the Platypus Lodge Restaurant in Eungella National Park by Broken River.
Day 5- Saturday: (B, D). Free Day.
Day 6- Sunday: (B,L,D). Joining the day tour to Cape Hillsborough National Park & Hibiscuses Coast our first stop is the little fishing village of Seaforth and hear about the Newry Island story before morning tea by the sea at Seaforth. Then off to Cape Hillsborough for a walk through the Mangrove Board Walk this starts our journey on how the aboriginals lived in this area lunch today will be at the OLD RAILWAY STATION tea rooms with its beautiful landscaped gardens. A short walk on Cape Hillsborough beach will be had after lunch to discover how this area was formed thousands of years ago. On your way home, we will stop at the Historic Leap Hotel and hear about the young aboriginal girl the place was named after, and explore That Sapphire Place.
Day 7- Monday: (B,L,D). We start the day with a walk and morning tea at the Botanic Gardens before heading off to the Northern Beaches stopping at Shoal Point, Bucucia Beach, and Eimeo Beach and have lunch at the Eimeo Hotel with its breath-taking views of the Coral Sea and the Islands. Then off to the Mackay Marina and the Harbour wall you never know you may see some whales breaching of the coast and also visit the Pine Islet Lighthouse the only one of its kind left in the world in working order.
Day 8- Tuesday: (B) Today is your last morning in Mackay with some free time before being transferred to the airport for your journey home.
