Today we take you on a journey showing you a sugar cane farm at harvest time.
Departing Mackay at 8.00/8.30am, you will travel to the north of the city through the cane fields to observe a cane harvester and haul out tractors working in the fields up close. Morning tea will be had at the farm with the workers and be told of the stories of times gone by. Then it’s off to a transfer siding to see the cane being transferred to the rail system. This system connects to all the mills in the region. After visiting the farm, then it’s off to the Racecourse Mill for a look from the outside at the Co-generation Plant and Refinery with a full interpretation of both. We then take you a little further South of Mackay to Hay Point Coal Terminal one of the largest bulk loading ports in the world. From the lookout an interpretation of the coal industry will be given by the guide. Your tour will then take you back to Mackay through the city to the Mackay Harbour, where you will be served lunch at the Lighthouse Restaurant with a talk on the Pine Islet Lighthouse the only one of its kind in full original working order it is over 130 years old.
